UVA Wise Student Government Association Passes Proposed Constitution Changes

On March 25, 2021, Joshua Justice, Dean of Students & Chief Housing Officer, sent out an email with the results from the voting on the Student Government Association’s constitutional changes as well as the SGA Executive Board Election Results.

On March 22 through March 25, the student body voted on proposed changes to the Student Government Association’s constitution. There were a total of five items that were voted on. All five items were passed.

The first item will change Title III  to “No member of the Executive Board shall be voting member on the Honor Court” from “No member of the Executive Board shall hold office on the Honor Court.”

The second item will change Title V to “All meetings of the Election Committee shall be held open to the College community with notice given in a public forum on the day of or before scheduled meeting” from “All meetings for the Election Committee shall be held open to the College community with notice given in a public forum at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting.”

The third item will change Title VII to “The Senate shall hold two general elections each spring semester. The first election shall be to elect officers of the executive board and the second election shall be to elected Senators. The exact date for holding the election shall be set by the Elections Committee. Freshman senators and any other positions not filled in the spring election shall be elected in the fall semester” from “The Senate shall hold general elections each spring semester. The first election shall be in the first week in April to elect officers of the executive board and the he second election shall be by the third week in April to elect Senators. The exact date for holding the election shall be set by the Election Committee. Freshman Senators and any other positions not filled in the spring election shall be elected in the fall semester by the third week in September.”

The fourth item will change Title II to “…Three demerits in an academic year shall make such a member subject to the removal from office” from “…Three demerits in an academic semester shall make such a member subject to the removal from office.”

Since all items were approved and passed by the student body these changes shall go into effect immediately.

Along with the constitutional changes, the student body voted on the SGA Executive Board.

The college’s new SGA President is Joshua McCray.
The college’s new SGA Vice President is Goldie Owens.

The college’s new SGA Secretary is Naya Davis.

The college’s new SGA Treasurer is Christopher “Logan” Smith.
