Personal, career counseling available at UVa-Wise

Center for Student Development,  Professional and Career Development offer free services

UVa-Wise offers several resources to students during every academic year and students can find them at The Center for Student Development.

Many stresses come with being a college student, from leaving home to balancing work and school, and as senior year approaches, finding a career. College is stressful.

The Center for Student Development (CSD) is here to help you tackle these obstacles and many more. The department helps students both personally and professionally by offering counseling services and assistance in career development.

“We help foster students’ personal and professional growth” says Director of the Center for Student Development and Licensed Professional Counselor, Rachel Carter.

Students may seek counseling for anxiety, depression, homesickness, relationship issues, stress, and more.

“A big benefit for students when they come in for counseling, is insight that they gain about themselves, and to help them recognize their own inner strengths so they can go out and apply those into their lives and do the things that they want to do successfully and be the best version of themselves” Carter said.

Starting on Monday, Sept. 3, Carter and fellow UVa-Wise counselor Andrew Slemp will be hosting “Mindful Mondays.”

“It’s an opportunity to come in, unwind, learn some mindfulness meditation techniques, and engage in those each week” Carter says. The event will run every Monday from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in The Chapel of All Faiths until Nov. 26.

Not only can CSD help students with their emotional well-being and mental health, but the department can also assist students professionally and academically. Assistant Director of Professional and Career Development, Neva Bryan, can work with students across all majors to help them achieve their academic goals.

Bryan can assist students with resumes and cover letters, finding internships, full or part-time employment, proper dining and networking etiquette, and more.

The Center for Student Development is located in Cantrell Hall, and is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To schedule an appointment with a counselor, call 276-376-1005 or go by the CSD office.
