The Highland Cavalier is the official student newspaper of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. The newspaper is published every other Wednesday and distributed free-of-charge to students, faculty, and staff on campus, as well as to local businesses in the surrounding communities. One thousand copies of each issue are printed each publication week.
About the College:
A public, four-year residential college located in the lush mountains of southwestern Virginia, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is recognized as one of the top public liberal arts colleges in the nation. Founded in 1954, UVa-Wise currently enrolls just over 2,000 students.
Local Display Rates:
The Highland Cavalier sells advertising in standard block sizes, but can accommodate unusual ad sizes with advance notice. Additional fees may apply for advertisements not conforming to the following standard sizes:
A) Full page: 9.5 inches x 20 inches = $600.00
B) Half Page: 9.5 inches x 10.75 inches = $325.00
C) Quarter Page (Vertical): 4.75 inches x 10.75 inches = $160.00
D) Eighth of a page: 4.5 inches x 5.375 inches = $80.00
E) Business card: 3.5 inches x 2 inches = $30
The above sizes are suggested sizes. Ad sizes can be customized to fit your needs.
Ad submissions should be in one of the following formats: JPG, GIF, TIFF or PDF files; or, files created using Adobe Photoshop or InDesign. Ads should be submitted in digital format to Advertising Manager Stella Matheos at email@example.com. Staff members are also able to design customized ads, but advance notice is necessary.
The deadline for ad submission is two weeks in advance of the issue publication date. We cannot guarantee that late ad submissions will be printed in the desired issue.
All student-run clubs and organizations directly affiliated with The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are able to run free advertisements, depending on space availability. These free ads may not exceed a quarter page. Clubs and organizations interested in placing larger ads in the paper will be charged the normal rate. Clubs and organizations are also encouraged to share information with the campus community about upcoming events via the paper’s “Campus Bulletin” feature.
An invoice and a copy of the newspaper issue in which an ad was placed will be mailed or hand-delivered to local advertisers. Prompt payment (via cash or check) is expected. Checks can be made out to “The Highland Cavalier.”
