UVA Wise prepares to vote on SGA constitutional changes

The UVA Wise Student Government Association met recently to discuss changes in its constitution. On Friday, March 5, Joshua Justice, Dean of Students and Chief Housing Officer, announced via email the SGA would put the proposed changes to an open vote.

The student body will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed changes beginning Monday, March 22, at 9 a.m. until Thursday, March 25, at 9 a.m.

The first item will be changing Title III from “No member of the Executive Board shall hold office on the Honor Court” to “No member of the Executive Board shall be voting member on the Honor Court.”

The second item will be changing Title V from “All meetings for the Election Committee shall be held open to the College community with notice given in a public forum at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting” to “All meetings of the Election Committee shall be held open to the College community with notice given in a public forum on the day of or before scheduled meeting.”

The third item will change Title VII from “The Senate shall hold general elections each spring semester. The first election shall be in the first week in April to elect officers of the executive board and the second election shall be by the third week in April to elect Senators. The exact date for holding the election shall be set by the Election Committee. Freshman Senators and any other positions not filled in the spring election shall be elected in the fall semester by the third week in September” to “The Senate shall hold two general elections each spring semester. The first election shall be to elect officers of the executive board and the second election shall be to elected Senators. The exact date for holding the election shall be set by the Elections Committee. Freshman senators and any other positions not filled in the spring election shall be elected in the fall semester.”

The fourth item will be changing Title II from “…Three demerits in an academic semester shall make such a member subject to the removal from office” to “…Three demerits in an academic year shall make such a member subject to the removal from office.”

For whichever items that are approved by the student body will go into effect immediately.
