UVA Wise announces classes to be held online for remainder of semester, spring commencement postponed

UVA Wise announced on social media Wednesday afternoon that all classes will be held online for the remainder of the spring semester, and Spring Commencement will be postponed until a later date due to ongoing concerns surrounding COVID-19.

A previous announcement on March 11 had announced the move for all classes to online for the “foreseeable future”, with a possible reevaluation of the situation on April 5.

The announcement stated the following changes for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester:

  • Beginning March 23, all classes will be conducted online for the remainder of the semester.
  • Commencement — originally scheduled for May 9 — has been postponed. A make up date has not been announced.
  • All events on campus are cancelled until at least May 15.

The college also said that all students who receive federal work study will continue to be paid, and modifications will be made to on-campus housing and dining, with credits for housing and dining to be prorated. Dean of Students Josh Justice sent an email to students Wednesday afternoon further discussing the modifications to housing and dining.

“We will provide pro-rated credits to student accounts for Housing and Dining contracts. We will send additional information on the mechanics of this process in a later communication outlining the process for the credit to remain on their student account to apply for any future bills,” Justice said in the email. “As long as the students remain enrolled through the end of the spring semester, financial aid will not be impacted.”

Despite the cancellation of all events on campus, seniors intending to graduate this spring will still be required to complete the cultural credits requirement to receive their degree. Administrative Assistant to the Dean Sass Sheppard sent an email to the UVA Wise student body on Tuesday, in which it was announced that students can receive one cultural credit each for watching international movies from a pre-approved list, and writing a response for each movie that must be emailed to Kasi Clifton at keh3x@uvawise.edu.
