The South Atlantic Conference announced on Thursday night that all remaining practices and athletic competitions for the Spring 2020 semester have been cancelled due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.
“The South Atlantic Conference and its member institutions continue to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health and medical professionals,” the SAC announced in a statement on their website. “As such the SAC Presidents Council has made the decision to cancel all spring athletics competition and practice for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year. This includes all SAC spring sports championships.”
The premature end to the season affects seven UVA Wise teams that were in the midst of their seasons, with over 70 future matches between the various teams being cancelled.
“This is an unprecedented situation and there will be many questions to work through,” UVA Wise Director of Athletics Kendall Rainey said in a statement released after the SAC’s decision. “There will be information from UVA Wise, the SAC and NCAA in the days and weeks to come, we will work diligently to support our athletes both emotionally and academically.”
