ATHENS, WV—The UVa-Wise women’s basketball team got their revenge over Concord University on Thursday night in an 87-81 road win.
Eight months after a loss to the Mountain Lions in the Mountain East Conference playoffs ended their season, the Cavaliers wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead. UVa-Wise led 21-19 at the end of the first quarter, but Concord regained the lead in the second period and entered halftime with a five-point lead. UVa-Wise took the lead again early in the third quarter, but a game-tying three-pointer by Concord would make it a 67-67 game in the fourth quarter. Freshman Caitlyn Ross and juniors Kalee Johnson and Hanna Oliver combined to score 20 points over the final seven minutes of the game to secure the Cavaliers’ second straight victory.
The Cavaliers saw four of their five starters finish with at least 17 points, as Oliver scored a team-high 20 points. Ross scored a career-high 18 points while recording her second straight game with seven rebounds and seven assists. Senior Cynita Webb narrowly missed her third double-double of the season with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Johnson scored 18 points with five rebounds and two steals.
The Cavaliers (2-1) will try for their third straight win on Monday night at 5:30 when they return to Wise for their home opener against Lees-McRae College. It will be the third time in program history UVa-Wise faces Lees-McRae, with the Cavaliers dropping their last game with the Bobcats 84-79 in 2017.
