The UVa-Wise volleyball team fell in three sets on Tuesday night to the Tusculum Pioneers as they extended their losing streak to 17 games in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-8 defeat.
It was the Cavaliers’ third loss in a row all-time against the Pioneers, and their second defeat against Tusculum this season after a 3-0 road loss on Sept. 17.
The Cavaliers remained within five points of Tusculum for most of the first set until a 9-4 scoring run gave Tusculum the momentum, as they took the first set 25-17. An attack error by the Pioneers to start the second set gave UVa-Wise its first lead of the night, and a kill by Briana Kerr a few minutes later would give the Cavaliers a 7-5 lead. Both teams remained within two points of each other throughout most of the second set, with a service ace by sophomore Matelyn Gibson giving the Cavaliers a two-point lead once again. Following the ace, Tusculum went on an 11-1 scoring run to pull away before eventually taking the second set 25-19. The Pioneers cruised their way through the third set after opening up with a 19-4 scoring run that would lead to a Tusculum sweep as the Cavaliers fell 25-8 in the final set.
Gibson led the team with six kills and 14 digs in the loss, while accounting for one of the team’s two service aces. Senior Ciara Kain finished with a service ace and eight digs while tying with sophomore Kelsey Green for second on the team with four kills. Senior Morgan Milligan led the Cavaliers with nine assists while ending the night second on the team with 12 kills.
The Cavaliers (1-17, 0-14 SAC) will head on the road for their next two matches, facing off with Lenoir-Rhyne University on Friday night and Mars Hill University on Saturday afternoon. They will return to Wise on Nov. 1 when they host Carson-Newman University at 7 p.m.
