WISE—A strong start was not enough on Saturday afternoon for the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, as the Cavaliers fell in three sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) to Lincoln Memorial University.
The Cavaliers kept the score close in the first set, as neither team led by more than four points throughout. The Railsplitters went on a 7-2 run late in the set to take the lead, and despite a late rally by the Cavaliers to pull within two points, Lincoln Memorial held on to take the first set 25-22.
In the second set, Lincoln Memorial jumped out to an early 9-2 lead over UVa-Wise and maintained at least a five-point lead over the rest of the set and won it 25-17. The Cavaliers and Railsplitters remained within two points of each other early in the third set, but a 5-1 scoring run for Lincoln Memorial gave them the momentum to complete the three-set sweep of UVa-Wise.
Redshirt senior Ciara Kain led the Cavaliers with nine kills in the loss while also recording nine digs and one block assist. Senior Morgan Milligan led the team with 13 digs, and junior Makayla Ledford had a season-high 10 digs while leading the team with 26 assists. Junior Brooke Abbott was second on the team with seven kills while recording a season-high four block assists, while sophomore Matelyn Gibson finished third on the team with six kills.
The Cavaliers (1-3, 0-2 SAC) head on the road Tuesday to face Tusculum University at 7 p.m. before returning to Wise on Friday when they host Lenoir-Rhyne University at 7 p.m.
