WISE, Va—The University of Virginia’s College at Wise women’s basketball team will begin their 2018-2019 season on Nov. 10 when they play Westchester University of Pennsylvania.
Jamie Cluesman will begin her first season as Head Coach at UVa-Wise after spending the last four seasons at Shepherd University as an assistant coach. Cluesman will be UVa-Wise’s seventeenth head coach.
“We are getting better every day and that’s all I can ask of the players,” Cluesman said. “We are off to a good start but the level of play from scrimmages to games is quite different. We will have to increase our overall intensity and focus to be able to compete with our opponents. Our 6 seniors are doing a great job with their leadership on and off the court and I’m excited to see how they carry us throughout the season.”
Cluesman looks for two players, Cynita Webb and Hanna Oliver, to standout this season.
“[Webb] barely missed averaging a double-double last season while leading the team in scoring and rebounding. She is a very athletic post player for us who will be able to stretch her defenders out on the perimeter,” Cluesman said. “In return, that will open up opportunities for our guards to attack and for our post players to take advantage of one on one situations in the post.”
Cluesman added that Oliver’s success from three-point range will be a significant key to the team’s performance this year. In 2017, Oliver shot 47-for-135 from three-point range, and her .348 three-point percentage was sixth-highest in the Mountain East Conference.
“Oliver will be another key player for us this season. She is a deadly three-point shooter and has been working hard on a counter move for when opponents take away the three point shot,” Cluesman said. “She led the team in made 3-pointers. She is a great defender for us and brings a lot of energy on both ends of the floor.”
The first home game will be November 17, 2018 against Urbana University. Looking towards their home opener, Cluesman said that if the team continues to work hard every day in practice that they will have a successful 2018-19 season.
“We emphasize energy and consistency every single day. If we continue to progress in those areas, we will put ourselves in a good situation when it comes down the stretch in games,” she said. “Consistency across the board will be the key to our success this season. Specifically, we must limit our turnovers and win the battle of the boards nightly.”
