Cavs set to conquer this season

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise’s volleyball team has kicked off their season and looks forward to a competitive season.

“Our team is coming together well, we have a lot more game experience under our belt in our returners, and we have added four freshmen to our roster that all came in and are ready to compete” Head Coach Kristen Salyer said.

“I’m really excited to continue watching our progress” Salyer said.

Salyer will begin her seventh season as head coach of the UVa-Wise volleyball program this fall. The Cavaliers wrapped up their 2017 campaign with a 6-24 overall record and went 2-14 in the Mountain East Conference. Salyer looks for standout players this season to lead the team in the conference.

“Ciara Kain had an outstanding junior year and I look for her to lead us offensively,” Salyer said. She said that Madelyn Lawrence and Brooke Abbott both had strong spring seasons, which will have them ready to dominate this coming season.

“With them [Lawrence and Abbott] stepping up we will be able to spread the ball around and have a more balanced attack which will help us be more successful.”

Salyer is looking for “MaKayla Ledford to run our offense in the setter position…Briana Kerr and Morgan Milligan are battling out the libero position, but both will play a huge role in our back row defense.”

For this season, the team has not set team goals yet, but Salyer said, “Our main goal is to battle every point, every set, every match. If we come out and we battle, special things can happen for this team.”

The UVa-Wise volleyball season kicked off on Aug 28 against Milligan College. The final score was 1-3 in favor of Milligan.
