Just a short putt away from their first tournaments of the season, the UVa-Wise men’s and women’s golf teams are looking to leave their mark in their final season with the Mountain East Conference.
After finishing fifth in the MEC Championships last season, the women’s team was picked to finish fifth in the preseason conference poll. They will be led by reigning MEC Player of the Year Katie Pritchett, who returns for her junior season after finishing third individually in the conference championship last year.
The men’s team will feature UVa-Wise Sophomore Bryce Varner, who finished tenth individually at the conference championship last season and earned All-MEC honorable mention, and junior Alex Arnold, who was named MEC Freshman of the Year two seasons ago. The Cavaliers were picked tenth in the preseason coaches’ poll after they finished ninth in the conference championship last season.
“Being picked tenth, we felt we’d be picked a little higher than that. Our goal is winning a conference championship, so being picked tenth, we see where people see us and we’ve got a lot to prove,” Head Coach Davis Absher said. “On the women’s side we were picked fifth and we were pretty pleased with that. We obviously want to finish top three, that’s kind of where we want to finish behind Katie Pritchett’s leadership. She’ll be one of the best players in the conference, so hopefully she can lead us to that.”
Both teams will begin their seasons at the Glade Springs Intercollegiate Championship in Daniels, West Virginia from Sept. 2-4, with the men playing next at the Greene Tuttle Invitational in Winchester, West Virginia from Sept. 9-10 and the women playing in the Bob Dibble Classic in Greeneville, Tennessee from Sept. 9-11.
