UVa-WISE’S NEW PANTRY TO HELP STUDENTS WITH FOOD INSECURITY AND HOMELESSNESS

WISE – Student food pantry Smiddy’s Cupboard will hold its grand opening Thursday at Cantrell Hall.

Smiddy’s Cupboard is a service available to all students at UVa-Wise to help students with an unreliable access to food – food insecurity – and those students who may be experiencing homelessness.

The grand opening ceremony will be in the first floor of Cantrell Hall near the Housing Office Thursday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m.

The Committee on Student Hunger and Homelessness started planning Smiddy’s Cupboard in December  2017 as a no-questions-asked pantry for any student who may find themselves  experiencing food insecurity.

Smiddy’s Cupboard is currently accepting donations and is asking for food that is “college student centered”, said UVa-Wise Housing Director Josh Justice.

“A lot of students don’t have kitchen facilities, so we aren’t the traditional food bank because we don’t take perishable items,” Justice said.

Donations to the pantry should be non-perishable and take no more than a microwave to cook if needed.

Smiddy’s Cupboard also helps maintain a fund to help students who are experiencing homelessness and who cannot stay on campus. This fund will help students in cases of emergencies where campus housing will not suffice. In these cases, the fund may be drawn from to put a student up in a hotel.

Monetary donations are also accepted. Please make all checks payable to UVa-Wise Foundation, 1 College Avenue, Wise, Va. 24293
