Cavs see coaching, staff changes

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has hired new coaches and promoted staff for the 2018-2019 athletic season.

Darrell-Dingus Ely has been named the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications at UVa-Wise. Ely manages all media relations for the 13 sports offered by the college, and focuses primarily on football,

baseball, women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse and women’s and men’s golf.

Before his promotion, Ely was the director of athletic media relations for eight years at UVa-Wise. Ely’s numerous accomplishments in his role at UVa-Wise have qualified him for his recent promotion.

Most notably, Ely has grown the UVa-Wise Athletic Media Relations program exponentially. Ely has ensured the media exposure of the UVa-Wise athletic department on national networks such as ESPN, CBS and the Sports Illustrated website.

head-coach position here at UVa-Wise.

Cluesman was a four-year letter winner at Concord University, and she also helped the Shepherd University Rams turn a 4-23 record into a NCAA Tournament berth and Mountain East Conference regular season championship.

Cluesman’s playing and coaching background have made her a good fit for the UVa-Wise coaching staff. Cluesman is the 17th head-coach that UVa-Wise has hired since becoming a four-year college.

Cluesman on Monday announced that Molly Land has joined the women’s team as assistant coach. Land played basketball for Shepherd University, where she was a four-year letter winner and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports and recreation.

Roger Whited, a native of Kingsport, Tennessee, has been named UVa-Wise’s new men’s tennis coach. Whited is a current history teacher within the Wise County School system.

Whited attended school and played tennis at UVa-Wise; he graduated in 1990. He has coached tennis at J.J. Kelly High School for five years and

coached basketball for 10 years prior.

New hires and promotions are sure to lead UVa-Wise to success in athletics and UVa-Wise has already begun to see improvement in the athletic department all around.
