Cavs earn recognition in several sports

Golf, softball, lacrosse see college, conference accolades in April

In the past month, many Cavaliers in different sports have earned accolades for their achievement in their respective competition.

On April 17. Katie Pritchett was named the Mountain East Conference Golfer of the Year.

Pritchett finished with a total score of 496 in six league rounds to Sydney Brill of Fairmont State and Alexandra Cardi of Notre Dame College. She is the first women’s golfer in the history of UVa-Wise athletics to achieve this award, regardless of conference.

She has also been named first team all-conference in both of her seasons played.

Another accolade achieved was by Taylor Brandts of the UVa-Wise softball team. Brandts once again won Pitcher of the Week, which seems to be a common occurrence this season. This is Brandts third time winning this award in the current season. In three starts, Brandts had been on fire at the time, totaling a 2-0 record in that span before dropping two pitchers duels against Shepherd and Fairmont St. Brandts then earned her 8th loss, splitting with Concord on the 18th. The senior slinger is 13-8 on the season.

Jessica Apgar of the Cavalier Lacrosse team earned her second Defensive Player of the Week award on the 16th. The Junior Midfielder wreaked havoc on the other team’s offense, causing five turnovers in the Cavs 14-10 win over Wheeling Jesuit. Apgar then made essential contributions in the teams win over Notre Dame College, totaling four ground balls and 2 forced turnovers for the Falcons.

McKayla Grasham also won Defensive Player of the Week on April 2nd, with five ground balls and causing three turnovers for the Railsplitters in their game against Lincoln Memorial. Grasham has scooped 32 groundballs and has caused 28 turnovers on the season.

Kristin Gobbi won Offensive Player of the Week that same day as UVa-Wise swept the weekly awards in the MEC. Gobbi has supplied the offensive firepower needed by the Cavs, scoring 38 points on the season with a shot percentage of .443.

Cavaliers across all sports have been stepping up and earning wins for their teams in the month of April.
