The UVa-Wise Concert Choir will be leaving on March 28 for a six-day trip to New York, New York. The journey to New York began last Fall when the Concert Choir began fundraising for the trip.
While in New York City, a group of 27 students along with Spanish professor Dr. Joseph Kern will be singing at the world-famous Carnegie Hall on April 1. This will be the first time that a group from UVa-Wise has ever performed there.
The Concert Choir will be doing a world premiere of a piece, which means it has never been performed anywhere else, on any other stage before. The piece, titled ‘Reflections on a Mexican Garden’, was specially written by Kevin Padworski for the UVa-Wise Concert Choir. It’s written in Spanish, English and one Aztec language. Students will be doing a half-day of rehearsals every day while in New York to prepare for their performance on Sunday.
Dr. Hannah Ryan, a professor of music at UVa-Wise, has a special connection to the conductor of the piece that the students are performing.
“My advisor when I did my doctorate is the conductor, so that’s how we have a connection. He knew that we would be able to learn the piece and be able to perform at a really high level,” said Dr. Ryan.
The Concert Choir has been preparing for this performance for some time now. They have been working on the music all semester as well as a little last semester.
The Concert Choir is set to have a full itinerary for the trip. The Concert Choir will be singing at different high schools on the way to New York.
Along with their performances, the group gets to see ‘Anastasia’ on Broadway and ‘Turandot’ at the Metropolitan Opera. The group will also get the chance to visit the 9/11 Memorial.
Senior Caitlyn Powers is one of the 27 students singing with the concert choir in New York.
“This is such an exciting an opportunity for me as a member of the UVa-Wise Concert Choir,” Powers said. “With it being my senior year, I couldn’t have thought of a better way to bring my chapter at UVa-Wise to a close. I’m ecstatic to be able to do what I love with the other members of the choir who have become a second family to me over the years. I’m truly blessed and grateful to have this opportunity of a lifetime!”
The Concert Choir will be performing their spring concert on the UVa-Wise campus in Cantrell Banquet Hall April 8 at 7 p.m. They will be performing some of their pieces from Carnegie Hall as well as other pieces in their repertoire.
