The UVa-Wise softball team has opened the season with a record of 7-2.
The Cavaliers, led by their ace Taylor Brandts, are poised to make a run at an MEC Championship this season
The Cavs begin conference play on Feb. 17, but the team has already made great strides toward their goal. The team had lost their opener to Lenior-Rhyne University by a score of 0-2, but then bounced back to tally three straight wins.
The team had spent Spring Break and the second half of February playing in South Carolina, in which they won five games and lost one.
In this stretch, Taylor Brandts had lived up to her reputation as a player of the year candidate, winning pitcher of the week and maintaining an ERA of 1.06.
Sophomore Shortstop Nikki Smith is off to a great start on the season, batting in five RBI’s in her 9 starts. When asked if she can keep up the scoring pace she said, “I’ll do my best.”
Smith also said that “My coaches and I are focusing on the process instead of the results, and it is leading to more results.”
When Nikki was asked about the differences in the team from last year, she said “I think we have some we’ve got some good, young hitters.”
Smith commented on the young hitters of the Cavalier softball team, and one in particular was infielder, Kalee Jones.
Jones has had a great start to the season, batting in four RBI’s and hitting one home run.
Junior Center Fielder, Ava Hockey also commented on the 2018 Cavaliers.
“I think we do have a lot of new faces out on the field, but we also have a lot more experience going into this season.” Said Hockey.
In the preseason, the Cavaliers were projected to finish second in the Mountain East Conference – South. Hockey was asked if this high projection would affect the preparation for the team.
“Not really”, Hockey Said. “I didn’t even know that we were picked second until about a week ago. We’re preparing the same way that we would normally.”
The strategy that the coaches have decided on seems to be working as UVa-Wise wins game after game.
The Cavs hosted LMU on March. 4 and were swept in the double header by scores of 3-6, and 9-12.
UVa Wise will be back in action on March 9 against Goldey-Beacom College.
