Campus recovering from network outage

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has been experiencing several sporadic network outages over the last several weeks.

Chris Boggs, Network Engineer at UVa-Wise, says that this is due to a power outage that the university experienced on Oct. 16.

“Sudden outages and/or fluctuations in electrical power can play havoc with electronic gear, and sometimes the effects are delayed, which was the case in this instance,” says Boggs.

The university’s technical team has since worked diligently to try to restore all network connections on campus. Network connections have been restored in most locations on campus.

The Slemp Student Center was still having some connection issues after all other locations were addressed, but the network team has found a temporary solution for the connection problems while working to put a long-term solution in place.

Boggs said that the network traffic has been restored and stabilized across UVa-Wise’s campus network.

Boggs addressed what steps students can take should they experience network outages in the future.

“Network outages on campus can be reported to the Information Technology Helpdesk located in Darden Hall Rm 110 [phone 276-376-4509 email: helpdesk@uvawise.edu],” Boggs said. “Residential students can also report network outages to their RA.”

The network team is looking to have all network issues resolved soon, as they continue to work towards a more permanent solution for all connection problems.
