Wise Writes held its first poetry slam Friday, Oct. 20 in the atrium of the Slemp Student Center with around 30 people in attendance.
The judges for the poetry slam were writers Neva Bryan, the assistant director of Professional and Career Development on campus and Jonathan Crimmins, a professor of English on campus.
Dylan Mabe, Bill Dotson, Dakota Turner and Lorraine Dresch all read poetry they had written at the event.
Judges as well as applause and cheers from crowd members determine the winners of poetry slams.
The winner of this poetry slam was Dresch, who wrote a poem about Big Stone Gap. She received a gift from Wise Writes for winning the competition.
For those interested, Wise Writes is planning different writing events throughout the semester. Information on events will be posted around
