Brass and grass: OctubaFest at UVa-Wise

UVa-Wise held OctubaFest in the Gilliam Center for the Arts on Oct. 18. The Wise Guys and the UVa-Wise Bluegrass Band performed at the cultural credit event.

The Wise Guys, made up of six musicians, play each semester after returning from fall and spring break.

At this semester’s performance, they played four songs. It was the band’s first performance since they traveled to Luxembourg to play this past spring. They started off their performance with a song called ‘Beer Barrel Polka’ and played four songs altogether, including a piece called ‘Gift of Love’.

The six-member Bluegrass Band, continued their set with ‘Jolene’, ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ and ‘When You Say Nothing at All’, a song made popular by bluegrass singer Alison Krauss.

The Wise Guys and the Bluegrass band finished off the performance playing ‘Just a Bowl of Butter Beans’, one of the late Papa Joe’s Smiddy’s favorite songs.

Chris Rose, a music instructor on campus and Bluegrass Band member, said; “It’s brass and grass, something you’ll probably never see anywhere else.”
