Lt. Governor Ralph Northam and Ed Gillespie will face off Monday, Oct. 9 in the final gubernatorial debate of the 2017 general election.
Both candidates are expected to focus on economic development, rural education and job creation during the debate at the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
This debate is the first statewide televised debate held in Southwest Virginia. Both candidates campaigned in Southwest Virginia during the gubernatorial campaign and since the college has been selected for the final debate, it is suggested that rural areas of Virginia will receive more attention in this political cycle, as opposed to candidates staying north of Blacksburg.
Tickets were raffled off to the public for this event. The debate, which begins at 7 p.m., is sponsored by UVa-Wise, the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia, and Southwest Virginia Technology Council. It will be broadcast on WCYB and other local stations.
The state general election is November 7.
