On Saturday March 11th, the brothers of Pi Lambda Phi hosted a Nintendo Super Smash Bros. Tournament in hopes to raise money for the non-profit organization, Take Back the Night.
Take Back the Night is a charitable 501(c)3 foundation which was created to spread the message to end sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse and all other forms of sexual violence. Michael Sutherland, president of Pi Lambda Phi, told the Highland Cavalier why the Pi Lambs chose this organization to be their beneficiary, “Take Back the Night advocates against sexual and intimate violence which is something a lot of our brothers have experienced not so much first hand, but with helping friends through. We decided that it would be a good endeavor because part of the comfort kits will be used here on campus and the other portion in the local hospitals.”
The Pi Lambs made an effort to spread their noble cause around the town of Wise by gathering donations from local businesses such as Cavalier Comics, Southern Steel Tattoos and SYKES Wise. Each of these organizations made generous donations to Take Back the Night and provided prizes for the winners of the gaming tournament.
The tournament offered an enjoyable experience for all who participated, with a public display of sportsmanship practiced by all contestants.
The matches were conducted through a bracket system where all competitors were matched against a random opponent. With the random placement of each participant, matches were immediately intriguing in the game that features popular Nintendo characters such as Mario, Pikachu, Donkey Kong and more.
Many of the contestants were very experienced with the 2014 Wii U game, while others were just playing for fun.
Anna Commons, a senior studying Computer Science at UVa-Wise, told the Highland Cavalier, “I entered just to have fun. I don’t play Super Smash Bros. often, so I expected to lose early on, which is exactly what happened. I did have a lot of fun, though, and I got to see some really good players.”
With many challengers participating with the same mindset, an enjoyable and friendly environment was created. Though, this did not stop people from playing to their fullest extent. Robert Mason, demonstrated his absolutely astonishing talent working his way up the bracket, to ultimately claim the coveted first place.
