The UVa-Wise lacrosse team has continued its terrific season as the Cavs have advanced to 4-1 on the year.
Wise began their season with a three-game winning streak in which the team was unstoppable. The Cavs began the season with a close game against Tusculum that they won 14-13.
Following the season opener, the team enjoyed a 17-0 rout of Lees-McRae and then pulled out another close, 9-8 victory against North Greenville University. Unfortunately, the streak would end there as the Cavs suffered a 12-9 loss to Catawba College in Sallisbury, North Carolina.
UVa-Wise would bounce back however, as they returned to the win column with a 21-6 domination of Newberry College.
Sydney Steinberg is the team’s scoring leader with 21 points while racking up an outstanding 14 assists in the team’s first five games. Hannah Marshall and Rachel Cole are also standouts for the Cavs as Marshall has 15 points while Cole has accumulated a .889 shot percentage.
When asked what the team’s key to success has been so far this season, Steinberg said, “We’re a well-balanced team across the board. Everyone on the team is a threat from our defense, to our midfield, and on offense.”
Also, Melanie Reilly was named the MEC defensive player of the week. Reilly has 42 saves and a .519 save percentage this season.
UVa-Wise’s next home game will be March 29 at 5:00 p.m. against Tennessee Wesleyan University at Carl Smith Stadium in Wise.
