UVa-Wise (18-8, 13-5 MEC) made Homecoming one to remember as they took down the West Liberty Hilltoppers, 72-62.
The Cavs improved their record to 18-8, cementing themselves in third place in the Mountain East Conference.
Allison Ball led the Highland Cavaliers with 16 points and eight assists. Ball also tallied five steals to set a career-high.
The Hilltoppers would pull ahead early, holding a 25-15 lead after the first quarter. However, the Cavs would rally back and capture a 37-33 lead going into the half.
West Liberty would get within three points of the Cavs with a little under eight minutes to play, but Wise held on, outscoring the Hilltoppers by seven points over the remainder of the contest.
UVa-Wise went 15-18 from the free throw line and scored 16 points off the bench. The Cavalier defense was a force to be reckoned with as they forced nine turnovers in ten minutes. Additionally, they scored 23 points off turnovers.
For the Hilltoppers, Mckenna Shives and Brandi Beader scored 22 and 17 points respectively. Mellissa Brown added 16 points of her own for West Liberty.
Five Cavaliers would finish the games with double-digit scoring totals as Ball, Taylor Sandidge, Makenzie Cluesman, Kayla Carey and Alle Moore completed the feat. Cluesman also added ten rebounds to give herself a double-double.
UVa-Wise’s next home game will be February 25 against Concord University at the David J. Prior Convocation Center in Wise, Va.
