UVa-Wise defeated West Virginia State 94-91 at home to win their fourth game in a row on November 21.
West Virginia State dominated most of the game as they led the Cavs by a score of 62-46 at one point in the third quarter. The 16-point lead would be the Yellow Jackets’ largest of the day before the Cavs mounted their comeback.
The Cavalier comeback started with buckets by Alle Moore and Makenzie Cluesman with a pair of Cluesman free throws in the middle. The Cavs’ 11-0 run brought the score to 62-57, Yellow Jackets.
However, West Virginia State would increase their lead yet again to make the score 71-60. In a back- and-forth battle, Cluesman decreased the Yellow Jackets’ lead 71-67.
Late in the fourth quarter, a three-pointer by Kayla Mullins gave the Cavs a 85-83 lead. The Cavs piled on afterwards, taking a 92-83 lead with a little under two minutes to play.
West Virginia State brought up their score and were only down by one with 23 seconds left, but senior Taylor Sandidge connected on two free throws to bring the final score to 94-91.
Cluesman finished the game with 23 points, 16 of which came in the second half, and 12 rebounds. Kayla Carey also scored 23 points, while securing 11 rebounds. Sandidge added 12 points of her own.
After the game, Carey talked about the start of her season. Carey said, “Well, I always give it back to my team. They give me the assists and I just make the layups so it’s always my team that has my back.”
The Cavaliers will take on West Virginia Wesleyan College on November 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the David J. Prior Center.
