Past chancellors, alumni, students gather to honor John T. Casteen III’s role in UVa-Wise’s development.
Last Wednesday, UVa-Wise officially dedicated the plaza outside the fourth floor of the library to the University of Virginia’s seventh president, John T. Casteen III.
The dedication ceremony featured a number of guests and speakers, including current UVA president Teresa Sullivan, UVa-Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry, past chancellor L. Jay Lemons, George Culbertson and Chancellor Emeritus Joseph Smiddy.
Before his term as president of UVA, Casteen served as Virginia’s Secretary of Education and was president of The University of Connecticut. Casteen is also a former professor of English at UVa, as well as a professor at the University of California at Berkeley.
An alumnus of UVA, Casteen during his tenure as president of UVA advocated Clinch Valley College’s change into UVa-Wise in 1999 and helped solidify the bond between the campuses at Wise and Charlottesville. Casteen has worked with seven different chancellors during his 20- year tenure and guided the campus through expansion of the college’s facilities and programs.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held for all who attended.
