The West Virginia State Yellow Jackets continued their dominance on October 16 with a win over UVa-Wise to clinch the Mountain East Conference regular season title.
The Cavaliers hung tough on Senior Day, especially in doubles play, where they claimed a victory at the third spot. However, the Yellow Jackets dominated singles play, where they won five matches in a row in straight sets. The Cavaliers only win in singles play also came at the third spot.
Freshman Taylor Carter (Church Hill, Tenn.) and sophomore Mackenzie Lawson (Wise, Va.) were the highlight of doubles play for the Cavaliers, where they took an 8-5 win over Kayla McKnight and Lindsay Goff of West Virginia State.
West Virginia State claimed the top spot as Laura Isbey and Marta Yevstakhevych pulled off an 8-3 victory over junior Daria Tyshchenko (Kirovograd, Ukraine) and senior Marti Gay (Denton, Texas).
West Virginia State rounded out doubles play with another victory when Kierstin Hensley and Nina Dillwald defeated senior Bailey Christoforatos (Fredericksburg, Va.) and freshman Aya Melhem (Rockvale, Tenn.) by a score of 8-2.
In singles play, it was freshman Melhem who secured the Cavs’ lone singles victory when she defeated West Virginia State’s Yevstakhevych in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). The Yellow Jackets won every other singles match including at the top spot, where Isbey topped Tyshchenko 6-3, 6-0.
The Cavs finished the regular season with an 8-7 overall record and a 3-4 record in conference, which was good enough for the fifth seed in the 2016 MEC Women’s Tennis championship.
