For the first time since claiming the Mountain East Conference title, the men’s golf team at UVa-Wise was back in action at the Barton Invitational at Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Two Cavaliers finished in the event’s top 15, led by sophomore Jacob Smith whose ninth place finished aided the school to a tie for fourth overall in the team standings.
Host Barton College took home the team trophy with a two-day score of 570, second place Belmont Abbey College was 14 strokes off the pace while third place Limestone College came in at 598.
Belmont Abbey’s B squad tied with UVa-Wise for fourth place with a team score of 619. Smith led the Cavs with a two-day total of 150. The Strasburg native shaved two strokes off his day one score of 76 to finish one stroke ahead of teammate Alex Arnold who shot a 73 on day one. The freshman’s day one performance aided him to a tie for 14th place in the invitational.
The event concludes the fall season for David Harvey’s squad. In addition to the MEC title, the Cavs posted four top-five finishes this fall.
