The men’s and women’s golf teams are prepared to build off their respective seasons last year and compete for a MEC championship.
Under head coach David Harvey, the Cavaliers are picked to finish 10th in the MEC after a poll vote by the coaches. The University of Charleston are the favorite to win the MEC, followed closely by Shepherd University and West Liberty University.
There are only three returning players for the men this season. Nick England will be the only senior on the men’s squad. Other returning athletes are junior Cody Large and sophomore Jacob Smith. Four freshman, Zac Mullins, Alex Arnold, Brad Hensley and Andrew Johnson are ready to begin their first season. The first tournament will take place September 18 at the Etowah Intercollegiate in Etowah, North Carolina.
The UVa-Wise women’s golf team has been chosen to finish sixth in the MEC under head coach Drew Absher. Wheeling Jesuit University and Notre Dame College sit respectively at the first and second spots. The University of Charleston follows in third place, just five points below Notre Dame.
Senior Makenzie Cluesman, who was on the all-conference squad last season, returns for the Cavs along with juniors Rebecca Farley, Katie Brownschidle and Veronica Presley. The women’s first tournament is on September 17 in Charleston, West Virginia at the MEC invitational.
