Team tops Lees-McRae 10-5; faces Brevard College April 5
UVa-Wise women’s lacrosse continue their streak of a winning season, improving their record to 5-2 after beating the Lees-McRae Bobcats 10-5 March 29.
The contest marked the fourth time this season that coach Meghan Dennehy’s team has limited an opponent to five or fewer goals as the Cavaliers limited the Bobcats to just 10 shots on goal in the victory.
Catherine Dina finished the game with a season-high six points (five assists) while Hannah Marshall, Kristin Gobbi and Sydney Steinberg each netted two goals in the win. Jessica Apgar (6), Gobbi (4) and Lauren Donahue (4) combined for 14 groundballs.
After their March 30 game was cancelled, the Cavs hosted the University of Charleston Golden Eagles at home Friday a, ending again with another win for a 6-2 current record.
Emily Henneberry (4), Catherine Dina (3), Sydney Steinberg (3) and Taylor Lawton (3) combined for 13 of UVa-Wise’s 21 goals against the Golden Eagles’ seven in the Mountain East Conference opener for both schools.
Rachel Cole had a great game for UVa-Wise as well. The sophomore picked up 10 draw controls and six groundballs to lead all players in both categories. As a team, the Cavs won 20 draw controls compared to nine for the Golden Eagles.
Dennehy’s club also won the groundball battle 23-19 while going 12-14 in clear attempts also. UVa-Wise heads to Brevard College in North Carolina today, where play starts at 4 p.m.
