Lacrosse: Cavs Maintain Winning Tally

Despite Saturday loss to Young Harris, UVa-Wise stands at 4-2 overall

The Cavs lacrosse women have been on a roll, winning three games back to back over spring break improving their record 4-2.

Beating LMU 15-2, the win was the first ever home win for the program, UVa-Wise began women’s lacrosse in 2015. In this win Catherina Dina scored three goals for UVa-Wise, two in the first half to post her first career collegiate hat trick. After sweeping LMU, Chowan stood no chance adding another win 14-1 finally score. UVa-Wise won its third consecutive game Sunday as freshman Sydney Steinberg registered the first hat trick of her collegiate career.

Also Kristin Gobbi added a team-high three ground balls while Taylor Lawton, Hannah Marshall and Kerani Davidson caused two turnovers each. With big help from The Cavs continued to receive strong play in net as goalie Melanie Reilly collected nine saves.

Coming into there next game at Murfreesboro, N.C the Women defeated Newberry college 11-9, Rachel Cole scored a trio of second half goals to lead UVa-Wise to an 11-9 come from behind victory over Newberry College Tuesday. Cole’s three goals helped offset a 6-3 halftime deficit.

In goal, Melanie Reilly collected nine saves and two ground balls in the victory. As a team, UVa-Wise went a perfect 16-16 in clear opportunities while finishing with 21 shots on goal giving UVa-Wise a 4-1 record, starting the season off great.

Saturday’s women’s lacrosse contest between UVa-Wise and Young Harris College featured 68 fouls and nine cards. The visiting Mountain Lions eventually won the more than two-hour game by the score of 14-6 behind Erika Cross’ four-goal performance. Coach Dennehy comments after the game “I think unfortunately the officials didn’t really let us play. It was more highschool lacrosse than college, so I thought that defiantly dictated on how the game went,” said Dennehy.

“Beside that I don’t think we played our best, you know we are still really young. We are just a second year program, so the inexperience came out of us today and got the better of us”. The women lacrosse team will play March 30 hosting University of Pikeville.
