The UVa-Wise men’s basketball team continues to struggle after two more difficult losses.
Their first game was against Shepherd University, where the men’s lost 85-82. The Cavs shot 46 percent (30-for-65) for the game and were 9-for-29 (31 percent) from distance. UVa-Wise went 13-for-16 (81 percent) from the free-throw line.
Matt Day’s 29 points and 13 rebounds was his 10th double-double performance this season, while Owens II’s 28 points was a season high. Hill Jr. recorded a career-high 12 points to go along with four assists. Sophomore forward Dimitri Sousa added eight rebounds as junior transfer forward Gervelle Kidd contributed seven points and six boards.
Having a tough loss, the Cavs suffered another loss to No. 2 in the nation Fairmont State 98-76. The Cavs shot an impressive 61 percent (17-for-28) in the second half and were 7-for-12 (58 percent) from downtown to finish the game at 46 percent (25-for-55). UVa-Wise was 86 percent (19-for-22) at the free-throw line.
Senior forward Matt Day led the Cavs with another near double-double performance, scoring a game-high 23 points on 10-for-16 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds.
Philip Owens II collected 15 points and dished out four assists, while junior transfer forward Gervelle Kidd had 12 points.
Freshman forward Zack McDaniel shot six of seven free-throws on his way to a career-high 10 points as he also added four rebounds.
The men’s basketball team will be on the road for the next few games until Feb. 18, when they will host Notre Dame College (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m.
