Coffee Night Nov. 10 Features Readings By Spaar, Cushman

The UVa-Wise Department of Language and Literature, Department of Communication Studies, and the college literary journal “Jimson Weed” will host “Coffee Night” Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7:30 p.m. at the Chapel of All Faiths.

Poets Stephen Cushman and Lisa Russ Spaar will be the featured guests.

Stephen Cushman is the Robert C. Taylor Professor of English at The University of Virginia, where he has taught since 1982. Cushman is both a poet and a scholar. He has published on representations of the American Civil War, American poetry, literature, and the environment.

Cushman has received many awards throughout his career. A couple of those awards include the All-University Teaching Award in 1992 and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award in 2015.

Lisa Russ Spaar is currently a professor of English and Creative Writing at UVa. She is also the director of the Area program in poetry writing. Spaar is generally acknowledged as a modern American poet, professor, and novelist.

Spaar is recognized as having many pros in her career, such as writing many books and receiving many awards. A couple of those awards include the Carole Weinstein Poetry Prize in 2011 and a finalist of the National Poetry Series in 1997. Overall, Spaar has been acknowledged for many achievements, one of the biggest having contributed more than 70 articles to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Coffee Night features “Fall Highland Voices: Writers and Performers of the College and Community.” All contributors to the 2015 fall edition of the Jimson Weed are welcome to present. and the program will be forthcoming.

Spaar and Cushman will also present a joint lecture, “So Much Depends Upon How Poems Pay Attention,” Wednesday, November 11, at 1:00 p.m., sponsored by the Department of Language and Literature and the Lecture Committee. The public is invited to both events, which are held in the Chapel of All Faiths.
