Women rebound from West Liberty loss for three consecutive wins
The UVa-Wise women’s volleyball team rebounded from a 0-3 loss against VSU with three straight games to turn things around with one match on the road and two at home.
Recording their first win against West Liberty, the Cavs tallied 58 assists and 87 digs and a season-high nine total team blocks. Junior Karley Allen, with a career high 30 digs and 18 kills, recorded her thousandth kill to become the fourth in Wise history to reach the 1000 mark. The Cavs beat West Liberty 3-1.
Coming home the Lady Cavs faced Concord for a 3-1 win. UVa-Wise had 54 total kills and an attack percentage of .230. In addition to recording nine total team blocks, the Cavs made 60 digs and kept Concord to hitting .145 for the match.
Glenville State came to Wise only to leave with a 3-0 loss. The UVa-Wise women’s volleyball team recorded an attack percentage of .360 while holding the Pioneers to hitting .129. UVa-Wise made 44 kills in the three sets and Glenville State had just 28 total. The Cavs tallied 52 digs and 41 assists to go along with two team blocks and eight service aces, while the Pioneers had only 44 digs, 28 assists and two service aces.
West Virginia Wesleyan was the Cavaliers first setback at home since Oct. 24 of 2014, when UVa-Wise fell to nationally ranked Wheeling Jesuit University (3-0). The defeat also marks the Cavs (9-8, 5-1 MEC) first loss against Mountain East Conference opponents this year, but that did not stop the Women from coming home with a win against Lees-McRae College.
After falling 25-19 in the first set to Lees-McRae (4-14, 3-5 Conference Carolinas), UVa-Wise came back with a three-set straight win. Outside hitter Karley Allen led the Cavs with 21 kills and 12 digs, while freshman outside hitter Ciara Kain had 13 kills. Junior middle blocker Lindsey Tucker flung a .556 for the match and registered 11 kills to help beat Lees-McRae in a 3-1 match win.
Coming off a tough loss at Brevard College, the Lady Cavs pulled it together and beat the Lady Blue Knights and Falcons. Against the Blue Knights, the Cavs hit .165 for the match and recorded 63 total kills. The Blue Knights posted an attack percentage of .121 and 57 total kills. As the match continued, UVa-Wise recorded a remarkable 109 digs to go along with 11 total team blocks. Urbana’s defensive matched UVa- Wise with 101 digs and 12 total team blocks. A 3-2 tough win against the Lady Blue Knights put the Lady Cavs back on a small winning streak. The Lady Cavs swept through the Lady Falcons UVa-Wise registered 33 total kills in the match to go along with 30 assists, 44 digs and eight and a half total team blocks. The Falcons made 26 total kills off of 23 assists while dishing out 51 digs and four total team blocks. Beating the Lady Falcons 3-0.
The UVa-Wise Women’s volleyball will travel for the next three games to West Virginia and will be back home Oct. 28 to play King University at 7 p.m.
