UVa-Wise Police Chief Ronnie Shortt said Tuesday that an Acura driven by UVa-Wise student Vladyslav Akimenko, 20, of Wise, struck the utility pole at the entrance to the gravel parking lot behind McCraray.

Campus Police Officer J. Miniard arrived at the scene at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Shortt said, and found Akimenko uninjured.

According to Miniard’s report, Akimenko said that his vehicle’s brakes malfunctioned, causing him to lose control and strike the pole.

Alcohol was not a factor in the incident, Shortt said.

Shortt said the crash caused a loss of power to the McCraray Hall parking lot lights, but to no other campus buildings or facilities. Clinch Valley Drive behind McCraray was blocked for about two hours but reopened to traffic that night.

Crews from Old Dominion Power Co. replaced the damaged pole and began repairing the line Saturday. Shortt said that repairs were expected to be finished on Tuesday.

Miniard issued Akimenko a summons for defective brakes.
