Volleyball Back in Action This September

The Lady Cavs volleyball team finished last season at an even .500 win percentage In the MEC, they finished 7-9 putting them at a .438 win percentage, placing them ninth in the conference. However, this will not stop the Cavaliers from pursuing their ultimate goal, which is winning a Mountain East Conference Championship.

With the hard work and effort put in last spring, winter, and summer, this year is expected to be a little different.

Returning junior, Karley Allen has expectations for the upcoming season and feels like they will be met. Allen posted a whopping 394 kills and 348 digs last season, earning the female athlete of the year award.

Kristen Salyer will enter her fourth season directing the UVa-Wise volleyball program in 2015. Two years ago, the team played its first ever NCAA Division II schedule as part of the Mountain East Conference. The Cavaliers scored a pair of MEC wins, including a 3-0 victory over Concord University at the Prior Center.

Allen also earned a place on the First-Team All-MEC selection. Allen became the first player in UVA Wise history to earn First-Team AllRegion at The NCAA Division 2 level.

When asked what her expectations was coming into the 2015 season, Allen said, “My goal is to finish better than last year. We are hoping to finish in the top Five of the conference. Last year we finished 9th. I know what we are really capable of achieving so we will improve and we are all hoping to make it to the Mountain East Conference tournament.”

There are a few additions to the roster this year. When asked what the new additions to the team had to offer, Allen replied, “Every Freshmen on the team has the potential to benefit the program and bring success to this season. On any given day, any one of them could step up and play a big role in helping us to victory. The upper classmen really stepped up this year and plan to lead the freshmen in the right direction.

The Lady Cavs’ first game against Slippery Rock will be held in North Carolina on September 4 at 3 p.m. and the volleyball team will compete again at 7 p.m. against John C. Smith University.
