The UVa-Wise men’s cross country team earned a preseason poll at fourth in the Mountain East Conference, resulting in a tie with the University of Charleston. The Cavs have four returners including upper classmen Anthony Wallis, William Young, Isreal Boling, and Shaquon Wilkins.
Senior Shaquon Wilkins finished sixth in last year’s Mountain East Conference Championship. This earned him First Team All-Conference honors. When asked about the his expectations for the upcoming season, Wilkins said, “This coming season, I am looking forward to my men’s cross-country team becoming closer and bonding as a unit because we never had that before. I want us to be there for one another, going out to dinner, playing games on the weekend outside of races, etc.”
Goals were set by the team for this season.
“Goals planned for the team this season are winning the 6k race, getting third if not better at conference, and making it to regionals as a team,” Wilkins said. “As a captain, you don’t necessarily have to be number one on the team, but you want to make sure that you are at least scoring points. Being a captain, I am trying to bring us together and not only push myself, but motivate them as well to make us better as a team.”
Wilkins also said that “things such as stretching as a team, cheering each other on in workouts, and cooling down as a team are all essential to this process.
“It don’t matter you are done with a workout first, you should stay and cheer your teammates on until everyone crosses the finish line,” Wilkins said. “I feel as my team will be successful young men and they can tell that I really care for them and expect the best for them.”
The Cavaliers will begin the 2015 fall season in Charlotte, NC this coming weekend.
