The UVa-Wise men’s golf team won it’s first major tournament in the program’s history on March 16 when the Cavs won the Shawnee State Invitational at Elks Country Club in McDermott, Ohio.
The team finished 12 strokes up over second-place finisher The University of Pikeville and posted a two-day total of 597 to take the win.
Junior Clint Lowe was dialed in shooting a 73 and 72 for a two-day total of 145, which was 1-over-par and third individually in the tournament.
“Everybody on our team played good,” said Lowe. “[The win] will give everyone more confidence, knowing we can play like that.”
Senior Matt Dotson finished 4-over-par with a two-day total of 148 to finish fourth individually.
Freshman Tyler Robinette had 6-over-par for a final total of 150 to place him sixth individually.
The collective efforts of Lowe, Dotson and Robinette put them on the Shawnee State Invitational All-Tournament team. The All-Tournament was made up of the top six golfers.
“This is the best I’ve played hitting the ball,” said Lowe.
Junior David Harvey rounded out the top 10 with a two-day total of 154 and freshman Lucas Holcomb finished with a two-day total of 157.
It was the first time in the tournament’s 21-year history that all five golfers from the same team shot in the 70s both days said Lowe.
The golf team will be back in action on April 2 for the Mid-South Conference Spring Invite held at Crooked Creek Golf Club in London, Ky.
