UVa-Wise women look to finish strong

The UVa-Wise women’s basketball team has had its highs and lows on the season, highlighted by wins over ranked opponents. 

January 3
Bluefield College 64 UVa-Wise 47

Senior small forward Chelsea Cluesman led the Cavs with a game-high 18 points and sophomore guard Katie Jo Lester finished with 12 points.

January 10
#7 Cumberland University 62 UVa-Wise 52 

The Cavs struggled to get started early, trailing Cumberland 30-14 at halftime, but the Cavs’ comeback fell short. Cluesman led the Cavs with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Charlotte Reasor finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior small forward Reynesha Archer contributed with 10 points off the bench for the Cavs.

January 12
University of the Cumberlands 63 UVa-Wise 52 

The Cavs made 11 3-pointers and shot almost 50 percent from the field, but it wasn’t enough to take down the Patriots. Reasor led the Cavs with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lester finished with 12 points on four three-point baskets. Junior guard Shameka Smith came off the bench to finish with 13 points.

January 19
UVa-Wise 71 #25 St. Catharine College 64 

The Cavs used a game-high 24 points and 13 points from Chelsea Cluesman to end the Cavs five-game losing streak. Reasor finished with another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Christine Nyobe chipped in with 12 points off the bench.

January 21
#16 Georgetown University 55 UVa-Wise 53 

Trailing by only two at halftime, the Cavs’ comeback fell short. Leading the way for the Cavs was freshman guard Makenzie Cluesman who contributed a game-high 21 points. Lester was the only other Cav in double figures with 10 points. Chelsea Cluesman finished with a complete stat line of six points, nine rebounds and six assists.

January 24
University of the Cumberlands 77  UVa-Wise 50 

After only managing 17 first-half points, the Cavs couldn’t fight back from a large deficit and hot shooting from the Patriots. Chelsea and MacKenzie Cluesman combined for more than half of the Cavs’ points with 26 in the game.

January 26
#7 Cumberland University 60 UVa-Wise 48 

After suffering a tough loss two nights before, the Cavs found themselves matched up against another ranked opponent. The Cavs faced a 34-18 deficit at halftime, but battled their way back in the second half, scoring 30 points. Leading the way for the Cavs was Chelsea Cluesman with 13 points and seven rebounds. The Cavs received 10 points and six rebounds from Nyobe.
